About

Mycelium, the vast underground network of fungi, plays a vital role in generating alternative proteins and food-grade substrates from industrial waste streams — unlocking the future of sustainable food production.

Learn more ↗

BioHifas is a Lithuanian deep-tech startup developing scalable mycelium cultivation technology using solid-state fermentation. We valorize industrial by-products — brewery waste, agricultural residues — into high-quality food-grade ingredients. Our team of PhDs and engineers is building the infrastructure for the next generation of alternative protein production.

What biotech solutions does BioHifas offer?

We answer the most common questions about our mycelium technology, R&D approach, and collaboration opportunities.

Contact Us →
What does BioHifas actually do?
+
BioHifas employs the power of mycelium to valorize industrial side streams into food-grade products. We develop technology in three areas: side stream processing into food substrates, mycelium cultivation in solid-state fermentation, and raw material conservation — based in Kaunas, Lithuania.
What is solid state fermentation?
+
Solid state fermentation (SSF) is a bioprocess where microorganisms — in our case, mycelium — grow on solid substrates with minimal free water. SSF is more efficient than liquid fermentation for certain fungal species, producing higher concentrations of bioactive compounds with lower energy and water requirements.
How does BioHifas ensure quality and safety?
+
Our CSO PhD Paulina Martusevičė brings deep expertise in fermentation and food technology. Every batch undergoes rigorous quality control — from substrate preparation through final biomass harvest — with food-grade standards applied throughout the production chain.
How can we collaborate with BioHifas?
+
We are open to collaborations with food companies seeking alternative protein ingredients, industrial producers with significant side stream volumes, research institutions working in mycology or food biotech, and investors interested in the alternative protein space. Contact tomas@biohifas.com to start the conversation.
Is BioHifas funded?
+
Yes — BioHifas is supported by the European Union through the Green Companies MTEP (R&D) Project. We are also backed by an experienced advisory board including prominent DeepTech business angels and food industry veterans with experience at Unilever.
What is the SUAVE project?
+
SUAVE is one of BioHifas's active R&D initiatives — exploring specific applications of mycelium fermentation technology. Visit the SUAVE page on our website for the latest updates on this project.
